Grass InfloRescence MutatIons and theIR Role In specIatIon
نویسنده
چکیده
Several examples of natural mutants in the grass family were presented. All appeared as changes in inflorescence structure. In mutated plants chasmogamy was restricted due to anomalous lodicules or compactness of ears. A rare glumeless mutation in Agropyron pectiniforme reduced the level of assimilation in the ear. All mutations appear as unfavorable in natural populations.

Evolution of the Sepallata Genes, Leafy Hull Sterile1 and Oryza Sativa Mads5 and Their Roles in Regulating Grass Floral Development a Thesis
EVOLUTION OF THE SEPALLATA GENES, LEAFY HULL STERILE 1 AND ORYZA SATIVA MADS5 AND THEIR ROLES IN REGULATING GRASS FLORAL DEVELOPMENT By Ashley Rae Christensen August 2009 SEPALLA TA (SEP) genes are key transcriptional regulators which act as cofactors with other floral organ identity genes during inflorescence development. Duplication events within developmental gene lineages followed by functi...
متن کاملMADS-box gene expression and implications for developmental origins of the grass spikelet.
Basic questions regarding the origin and evolution of grass (Poaceae) inflorescence morphology remain unresolved, including the developmental genetic basis for evolution of the highly derived outer spikelet organs. To evaluate homologies between the outer sterile organs of grass spikelets and inflorescence structures of nongrass monocot flowers, we describe expression patterns of APETALA1/FRUIT...
متن کاملThe SEPALLATA-like gene OsMADS34 is required for rice inflorescence and spikelet development.
Grass plants develop distinct inflorescences and spikelets that determine grain yields. However, the mechanisms underlying the specification of inflorescences and spikelets in grasses remain largely unknown. Here, we report the biological role of one SEPALLATA (SEP)-like gene, OsMADS34, in controlling the development of inflorescences and spikelets in rice (Oryza sativa). OsMADS34 encodes a MAD...
متن کاملFunctional associations of floret and inflorescence traits among grass species.
The aerodynamics of wind pollination selects for an intimate relation between form and function in anemophilous plants. Inflorescence architecture and floral morphology vary extensively within the Poaceae, but the functional implication of this variation remains largely unknown. Here we quantify associations between floret, culm, and inflorescence characteristics for 25 grass species in Kananas...
متن کاملReducing Competitive Suppression of a Rare Annual Forb by Restoring Native California Perennial Grasslands
Populations of the rare annual forb Amsinckia grandiflora may be declining because of competitive suppression by exotic annual grasses, and may perform better in a matrix of native perennial bunchgrasses. We conducted a field competition experiment in which Amsinckia seedlings were transplanted into forty 0.64-m 2 experimental plots of exotic annual grassland or restored perennial grassland. Th...
